La Campionissimo (the Champion of Champions) is the name of Valtellina's Gran Fondo that races over the Passo Gavia, the Passo Mortirolo and the Santa Cristina. Next year's edition has been completely revamped to ensure that each rider has a day to remember.
Riding the same passes as the pros doesn't happen often but now it's possible as Aprica will host the finish of a stage of the 2015 Giro d'Italia. Registration opens on November 1st 2014.

29 October 2014, Aprica (So) – A brand new event kicks off on June 28th 2015. Starting and finishing in Aprica, riders are expected to climb three of the toughest Alpine passes: Passo Gavia, Passo Mortirolo and the Valico Santa Cristina.

La splendida maglia de La CampionissimoWith its revamp, the participants of the 1st Gran Fondo La Campionissimo are set to benefit from the additional services and enthusiasm.

The start will be split into three groups: first to start will be the heroes of the 175 km race; followed by the 85 km parcours; and finishing with the 155 km participants.

During the event 10 police motorbikes, 30 technical motorbike support crews and 20 Smart cars with ready-to-use wheels will be spread across the route for support, as well as several fixed service course workstation with mechanics.

While the riders are testing themselves on the climbs, spectators can spend time testing Valtellina's culinary delights. With seven stations in total, including three "Gourmet Valtellina" points at the Passo Gavia, the Passo Mortirolo and on the finish line, tasting the typical products from this stunning region will be an event in itself: the Bresaola, the Bitto, the famous Valtellina wines and much more.

After an undeniably tough 175 km and 4500 metres of altitude, the "Campionissimo" of 2015 will be crowned.
There are two other distances on the day too: the Mediofondo, with 155 km and 3600 metres in height difference, taking in the Passo Gavia and the Passo Mortirolo; and the shorter route of 85 km with the Mortirolo climb and a mere 1850 metres of climbing.

Riding the Mortirolo on June 28th will certainly be an unmissable event, as riders battle on the very same 18% climb that the Giro d'Italia pros will race on during the 16th stage of Pinzolo-Aprica. Sharing the exact same finish line, expect equally high emotions and excitement.

Saturday June 27th will also witness the very 1st MTB Gran Fondo, which will see riders take on 45km across Aprica's surrounding mountains.

The entry fee for La Campionissimo is fixed at 60 euro and includes a brilliant one-off jersey that riders are obliged to wear during the event. Registration opens on November 1st 2014 and will close once the 3,000 rider limit has been reached.
